Airbus Showcases “Wingman” Drone Concept Ahead of FCAS Rollout

At the ILA Berlin Aerospace ExhibitionAirbus Defence and Space presented a full-scale mock-up of its Wingman concept: a next-generation unmanned, fighter-type drone designed to operate in close coordination with manned combat aircraft.

What Is the Wingman?

Named after the traditional fighter pilot role that supports the lead aircraft, Airbus’s Wingman is an uncrewed aerial vehicle intended to accompany modern fighters such as the Eurofighter Typhoon—and potentially others like the F-35—even into hazardous missions AirbusDefaultWikipedia.

The model on display was akin to a “show car” prototype in the automotive world: a design exercise demonstrating anticipated capabilities—but not necessarily definitive of final production design AirbusDefault.

Airbus emphasized that the cockpit pilot—referred to as the “command fighter”—would always retain ultimate authority, deciding on key mission elements and weapon deployment AirbusWikipedia.

Capabilities and Design Features

Per Airbus, the Wingman is built to enable manned-unmanned teaming, enhancing combat flexibility by allowing drones to undertake high-risk tasks. Key roles include:

  • Reconnaissance and intelligence gathering
  • Electronic warfare (e.g., jamming and deception of enemy systems)
  • Precision strikes, using guided munitions or missiles, against ground or aerial targets AirbusThe SunOrbitshub

The concept model highlights several design attributes:

  • Low observability (stealth), achieved through streamlined shaping and likely internal carriage of weapons and sensors Army RecognitionDIE WELTDefault. One report notes a wingspan of around 12 m and length near 15.5 m DIE WELT.
  • Integration of advanced sensor arrays, electronic warfare capabilities, and secure connectivity for real-time mission coordination AirbusArmy RecognitionOrbitshub.
  • Airbus aims to offer a cost-effective solution—arguably priced at approximately one-third the cost of a conventional manned fighter Breaking Defense.

Artificial Intelligence to Power the Wingman

Also announced at ILA was a framework agreement between Airbus and Helsing, a European defense AI and software specialist. Their collaboration will create AI systems that empower the Wingman to autonomously:

Helsing will contribute its “AI stack” with software-defined mission logic, while Airbus brings its expertise in managing manned-unmanned coordination AirbusBreaking Defense.

Context and Path Forward

The Wingman concept arises from a clear requirement by the German Air Force for an unmanned system capable of operating alongside current fighter fleets, bridging the gap until the Future Combat Air System (FCAS)—a joint German-French-Spanish sixth-generation fighter system—is deployed around 2040 AirbusDIE WELTWikipedia.

Airbus is positioning Wingman as a budget-friendly force multiplier—expanding the effective combat mass of fighter fleets through affordable unmanned assets AirbusOrbitshub.

Moreover, Airbus has progressively developed crewed-uncrewed teaming technologies over the past years:

  • Starting in 2018 with MUT (Manned-Unmanned Teaming) flight trials using Do-DT25 target drones controlled by manned aircraft Airbus+1.
  • In 2021, drills like Timber Express demonstrated mission-tasking to Remote Carriers from an in-flight Eurofighter, undertaking surveillance and electronic warfare Airbus.
  • Airbus continues to build these capabilities across multi-platform missions, including helicopters and drones, enabled by AI-driven, mesh-networked systems Airbus+1.

Why It Matters

At a time when modern conflicts—notably seen in Ukraine—have elevated the role of drones across reconnaissance and combat, the Wingman project reflects a shift toward integrated, mixed-force operations in air warfare The SunAirbus.

By blending AI-driven unmanned platforms with human-controlled command roles, Airbus anticipates maximizing mission efficiency, pilot safety, and cost-effectiveness—potentially changing the future of aerial combat across Europe and allied nations.
