CATL Naxtra – the world’s first mass-produced sodium-ion (NA+) battery

Innovation in Sodium-Ion Technology also known as Na+

CATL’s Naxtra Battery is a major advancement in battery technology. It is the first to successfully produce sodium-ion batteries on a large scale. These batteries are safer and more abundant than traditional lithium-ion batteries, reducing our reliance on lithium and supporting a more diverse energy future.

Performance in Extreme Temperatures
the Naxtra Battery line includes two types: one for electric passenger vehicles and another for heavy-duty trucks. Both can operate in temperatures ranging from -40°C to +70°C, making them highly versatile. The passenger EV battery retains 90% of its power at -40°C and performs well even when the charge is very low.

Efficiency and Longevity

The Naxtra passenger EV battery (Na+ Traction) has an energy density of 175Wh/kg, which is the highest for sodium-ion batteries and similar to LFP batteries. It can travel up to 500 kilometers on a single charge and lasts over 10,000 cycles, reducing maintenance needs. It is also safer, as it eliminates factors that support combustion, moving from passive to intrinsic safety.

Benefits for Heavy-Duty Trucks

The Naxtra 24V battery (pictured above) for heavy-duty trucks lasts over 8 years and cuts total costs by 61% compared to traditional lead-acid batteries. It offers deep discharge capabilities, easy starting at -40°C, and can start even after a year of inactivity. This makes it more efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective, helping to phase out lead-acid batteries in commercial vehicles.

Wider Applications

CATL’s advancements in sodium-ion batteries now allow for better performance in very cold conditions. This breakthrough is crucial for using batteries in all scenarios, pushing the boundaries of battery technology and applications.

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) is a global leader in the development and manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries. Founded in 2011 and headquartered in Ningde, China, CATL is dedicated to providing innovative new energy technologies and solutions. The company is one of the largest suppliers of electric vehicle (EV) batteries worldwide, partnering with major automotive brands such as Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Volkswagen. CATL’s commitment to research and development drives its mission to advance sustainable energy solutions and reduce dependence on traditional fossil fuels.
