CATL’s Next-Gen Sodium-Ion Battery: A Game Changer for EVs?
ontemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) is making waves in the electric vehicle (EV) industry with its latest announcement: a new sodium-ion battery that promises a 500 km range. The company plans for mass production as early as 2026, marking a significant step toward making this technology mainstream.
What Makes Sodium-Ion Batteries Special?

While slightly less energy-dense than lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries have some key advantages. They perform exceptionally well in cold climates, are more sustainable, and offer enhanced safety. This makes them ideal for expanding EV adoption in regions with harsh winters and for use in various vehicle types.
CATL believes this new technology could meet over 40% of the passenger vehicle demand in China, highlighting its massive commercial potential. The batteries are also compatible with standard battery modules, allowing automakers to integrate them into existing vehicle platforms without major redesigns.
Progress and Milestones
CATL is working with partners to bring these batteries to market. The company has already introduced the “Sodium New Power Battery” for passenger cars and a version for heavy-duty trucks, both designed to operate in extreme temperatures from -40°C to 70°C.
In a recent win, the battery became the first of its kind to pass China’s national safety certification for EV power batteries. This achievement confirms that the technology is ready for large-scale applications, offering a viable alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries.
