Home Robots No Longer Science Fiction: Norwegian Startup Raises $100 Million to Bring 1X NEO to Life!
Every household with a robot no longer seems like science fiction. Norwegian startup 1X is raising $100 million to put its home robot NEO into production.
The robot weighs thirty kilograms, has two legs, and is 1.65 meters tall. The devices are designed to be household helpers and must be able to do simple tasks, which is technically challenging. Human movements are particularly complex due to fine motor skills.
Despite the challenges in AI training and technology, 1X has the trust of investors. At the end of last week, it announced that EQT Ventures is participating in the Series B round, in which it is raising $100 million.
Other investors joining in are Sandwater, Samsung Next, Skagerak Capital, and Nistad group. The latter two also participated in the first round. At that time, $23.5 million was raised, including from Tiger Global and OpenAI. NVIDIA is a technical partner.
The cost of the humanoid robots that CEO Øivind Børnich wants to make is not yet known. He keeps it at “very affordable.”
In the course of this month, 1X is holding an open house for a small group of interested parties. When they visit the warehouse, they will see fifty robots working shoulder to shoulder with human employees of the ambitious startup.
The Norwegian robots learn to work in a household by imitating human behavior. It therefore looks like owners of a household bot will have to give their new “pet” a certain amount of training.
Below is a detailed analysis of the humanoid robot that Tesla showed at the end of last year, another player in this field that 1X will follow with interest.
The robots that Amazon is building are primarily focused on work in fulfillment centers in this phase. It takes into use 1,000 new robots behind the scenes every day to scale up and automate its business processes. By the end of this decade, the company will therefore have more robots in operation than people. The operational costs of Amazon’s humanoid robot Digit will fall from twelve dollars now to ultimately three dollars per hour in the coming years.
Additional information:
- The NEO robot is still in development, but 1X expects to start shipping it in 2025.
- The eve robot is already available
- The robot will be able to perform a variety of tasks, including cleaning, cooking, and running errands.
- 1X is targeting the consumer market, but it also sees potential in the business market.
Analysis:
The development of the NEO robot is a significant milestone in the field of home robotics. It is the first humanoid robot that is designed for mass production. If 1X is successful, it could lead to a new era of robots in the home.
However, there are still challenges that need to be overcome before the NEO robot can become a reality. These include the cost of the robot, the safety of the robot, and the ability of the robot to learn and adapt to new situations.
Despite these challenges, the potential of home robots is enormous. Robots could help to automate tasks, reduce household chores, and improve the quality of life for people of all ages.
